Frail World: A Table Symbolizing Fragility and Peace

Alexandr Strepetov's Unique Design

Inspired by recent events and the need for peace

Alexandr Strepetov, a renowned designer, has created a thought-provoking table called "Frail World." This unique design aims to showcase the fragility of our world through the use of glass. Strepetov drew inspiration from his own artworks and observations, particularly the recent events in Ukraine. The table pays homage to Gerald Holtom, the designer of the peace symbol, and serves as a metaphor for the war breaking the foundation of world peace.

What sets the "Frail World" table apart is its original design. When viewed from above through the glass tabletop, the lines of the table legs, along with an inscription, form the symbol "Pacific." This clever incorporation of the symbol adds depth and meaning to the design, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace.

The realization of the "Frail World" table involved a combination of artistic vision and technical expertise. Strepetov initially created a layout using painted wood and glass. However, it was not until recently, during these dark times, that he realized the potential of adding an inscription to the glass tabletop. This revelation led to the discovery of the hidden symbol and the completion of the design.

The "Frail World" table stands at a height of 174 mm with a diameter of 430 mm. Its compact size allows it to fit seamlessly into various living spaces, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of peace.

Interacting with the "Frail World" table reveals its dualistic nature. From different angles, one can see different aspects of the world embodied in the object. When viewed from the side, the wide colorful legs of the table represent a sustainable world filled with beauty and diversity. However, when observed from above, the fragile glass symbolizes the potential imbalance that can disrupt the world's stability. The inscription serves as a reminder to preserve peace and protect the integrity and beauty of our world.

The design process for the "Frail World" table began in September 2016 in St. Petersburg. However, the project was put on hold until March 2022 when Strepetov revisited and completed the design. The table's creation involved extensive research on the potential of a single drawing to inspire various objects. Strepetov's exploration of this concept led to the paradoxical result of a graphic work transforming into a unique table design.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges is an integral part of any design process. Strepetov often finds it difficult to switch focus when new ideas arise, often leaving them as sketches for unrealized projects. However, the "Frail World" layout captivated him and became almost finished before being set aside. The recent realization of its potential and the incorporation of the hidden symbol brought new life to the design.

The "Frail World" table serves as a powerful symbol of the delicate balance between peace and war. Its wide stable legs represent the unshakable nature of the universe, while the fragile glass and hidden symbol remind us of the vulnerability of life and peace on Earth. Strepetov's design encourages us to sit down at the negotiating table and work towards preserving peace.
